7th International Underwater Technology Conference and the 2nd China-Brazil Deepwater Forum

The 7th International SUT (China) Technical Conference and the 2nd China-Brazil Deepwater Forum, hosted by China National Offshore Oil Corporation and China University of Petroleum (Beijing), and co-organized by China University of Petroleum (Beijing), SUT China Branch, SUT Brazil Branch, CNOOC-CUP Joint Institute for Ocean Energy Engineering & Technology, were successfully held at Beijing’s SINOPEC Conference Centre from 26 to 30 September, 2018.

The conference attracted nearly 200 experts and scholars from CNOOC Research Institute, China Ocean Mineral Resources R & D Association, China Minmetals Corporation, China Ship Scientific Research Center, Husky, GE, DNV, DMAR, Aker solution, Royal IHC, 2H Offshore, Federal University of Rio De Janeiro, Seoul National University, China University of Petroleum (Beijing), China University of Petroleum (East China), Dalian University of Technology, Tianjin university, China Ocean University, and so on.

At the opening ceremony of the conference on 27 September, Frank Lim, chairman of SUT China branch and professor at the Institute for Ocean Engineering of China University of Petroleum (Beijing), delivered a welcome speech and said that this meeting aimed to build an open technology exchange platform, develop technologies to harvest marine energy and mineral resources, and further promote the international cooperation between Chinese and Brazilian governments and companies. Frank Lim also introduced the key achievements the Institute for Ocean Engineering of CUPB had made in recent years; the institute will take this opportunity to actively cooperate with related enterprises and universities.

Steve Hall, CEO of global SUT, thanked the SUT China branch for their kind invitation and affirmed the efforts and contributions which the Chinese branch had made in helping to advance the knowledge for ocean engineering in the international arena. He also expressed his expectation for the colleagues of China branch to jointly maintain and build the international brand of SUT.

Professor Segen, president of SUT Brazil and academician of the Brazilian Academy of Engineering, said in his speech that the first China-Brazil Deepwater Forum was held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Since then, Chinese and Brazilian experts and scholars engaged in deepwater engineering had carried out all-round cooperation, and the China-Brazil Joint Institute for Deepwater Technology had continued to produce a substantial number of quality researchers for the benefits of both countries.

Professor Liu Hsu, member of both Brazilian Academy of Science and Brazilian Academy of Engineering; Li Qingping, division head of CNOOC Research Institute; and Professor Carlos Levi, former president of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, made keynote speeches, respectively, to complete the first day.

On subsequent days of the conference, representatives from China, Brazil, United States, United Kingdom, Norway, Netherlands, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and so on, made more than 40 presentations on various subjects involved in “Ocean Engineering and Equipment” and “Seabed and Hydrates Mining”.

During the conference, the first meeting of local representatives of SUT China was held to form the new committee and discuss the branch’s future development.

It was announced that the 8th SUT (China) Technical Conference will be held in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, co-organized by Zhejiang Ocean University and People’s Government of Zhoushan Municipality.
