Saving The London: a Mary Rose for the 21st century

On the 7th March 1665 tragedy struck in the Thames Estuary, when the warship London exploded with the loss of over 300 souls. Today, over 350 years later, the tragedy continues as the wreck site washes away with every passing ship and tide. In 2019 the Nautical Archaeology Society, the London Shipwreck Trust and Southend Borough Council launched the “Save The London” Campaign, to support the recovery, excavation, conservation and display of the protected wreck in a purpose-built facility in Southend-on-Sea. This presentation will provide the background to the ships loss; its rediscovery; the work of the dedicated team of volunteer divers who are saving artefacts from destruction as well as the innovative scheme to recover the ship from the Thames.
