Special Interest Groups
Marine Renewable Energy
SUT’s Special Interest Group (SIG) on Marine Renewable Energy aims to be the UK’s leading forum for reviewing progress, sharing knowledge and highlighting scientific and commercial opportunities in harnessing renewable energy from the sea. It also aims to promote environmental protection and encourage industry investment to drive the sector forward.
GROUP MEMBERSHIP FOR MARINE RENEWABLE ENERGY
The group should consist of members with a strong interest in its goals, ensuring a broad representation from industry, academia, research and government. Click here for a list of the current members of this SIG.
Every three years, subject to Council approval, members of the Marine Renewable Energy SIG appoint a chairperson from among themselves.
SIG members in this area can access the members section via the link below.
What is Marine Renewable Energy?
Marine Renewable Energy harnesses the power of oceans and tides (wind) to generate clean, sustainable electricity. It includes technologies such as:
- Tidal turbines
- Wave energy converters
- Offshore wind farms
This sector offers significant potential for reducing carbon emissions and diversifying energy sources. Advances in technology, cross-industry innovation and collaborative research are key to making marine renewable energy a reliable and cost-effective part of the global energy mix.

Exploring Marine Renewable Energy
Marine Renewable Energy plays a critical role in the transition to net-zero by delivering a reliable, low-carbon source of power that complements wind and solar. The sector drives economic growth by creating new jobs in engineering, manufacturing, operations and research, while supporting coastal communities through infrastructure development and local supply chains.
By harnessing the ocean’s vast energy potential it strengthens the blue economy, fostering sustainable use of marine resources and positioning coastal regions as hubs of innovation and growth.
Modern technologies driving marine energy innovation
Marine Renewable Energy is being advanced through a range of innovative technologies, each harnessing the ocean’s power in unique ways.
- Wave energy converters capture the motion of surface waves to generate electricity
- Tidal turbines exploit predictable tidal currents to drive underwater rotors
- Floating wind platforms allow wind turbines to operate in deeper waters where winds are stronger and more consistent
- Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) uses the temperature difference between warm surface water and cold deep water to produce power
- Emerging hybrid systems combine multiple technologies, such as tidal and wave devices on a single platform, maximise energy capture and improve efficiency
The Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) plays a pivotal role in advancing Marine Renewable Energy by fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange and innovation across industry, academia and government.
As a collective SUT’s SIG members disseminate cutting-edge research and best practices, helping to accelerate technology development and deployment. The group also aims to provide objective advice to policymakers and industry stakeholders, helping shape strategies and regulations that support the sustainable growth of Marine Renewable Energy.
