Salvage and Decommissioning  Salvage and Decommissioning  2

The SUT’s Salvage and Decommissioning Specialist Interest Group (SIG) exists to advance best practice, uphold the highest standards of safety and champion environmental protection in all aspects of marine salvage and offshore decommissioning

How the SUT is leading the way on Salvage and Decommissioning

Through innovation and the responsible adoption of new technologies, the group aims to equip practitioners with the knowledge and tools needed to meet the growing technical, regulatory and environmental challenges of the sector.

At its core, the SIG’s vision is to foster sustainable approaches that protect life, property and the marine environment, while enabling efficient and effective project delivery.

Group membership for SUT’s Salvage and Decommissioning SIG

Membership of the Salvage and Decommissioning SIG is granted to individuals with relevant experience. All enquiries will be reviewed by the Committee’s chairperson.

To become a member of the Salvage and Decommissioning SIG, individuals are required to be individual or corporate members of the SUT.

Why should I get involved in the SUT’s SIG on Salvage and Decommissioning?

The Sig provides a platform for networking, collaboration and knowledge exchange across disciplines. Acting as a bridge between academia, industry, regulators and practitioners, the SIG creates opportunities for members to engage with peers, contribute expertise and help shape the future of salvage and decommissioning practice.

What does the SIG on Salvage and Decommissioning focus on?

The Salvage and Decommissioning SIG focuses on three central themes: Life, Property and the Environment.

  • Life: The safety and preservation of human life is the group’s overriding concern, guiding the way in which salvage and decommissioning operations are approached.
  • Property: Whether an asset or a liability, all property should be managed in the marine environment. This SIG recognises that its impact is determined not by origin, but by its presence, composition and location.
  • Marine Environment: This SIG emphasises the importance of understanding ecosystems at a fundamental level and especially how small changes can, in some circumstances, lead to wide scale effect.

Who should join this SIG on Salvage and Decommissioning?

We welcome members, both individuals and corporates, from the following areas:

  • Professional practitioners: salvage masters, engineers, project managers
  • Regulators, government bodies
  • Environmental consultants and scientists
  • Academics and students working in marine engineering, offshore engineering and environmental science
  • Suppliers and service providers

What are the benefits of joining the SIG on Salvage and Decommissioning?

By joining the SIG on Salvage and Decommissioning, members gain access to dedicated Focus Pages covering Technology, Marine Science, Regulation and Operations along with the opportunity to download previous SIG papers and presentations.
