Why is the North East of Scotland significant in Subsea Engineering and Operations?
For over 50 years, the North East of Scotland, driven by a world-class oil and gas industry, has played a vital role in meeting the UK’s energy needs. Cities like Aberdeen have been recognised globally as centres of excellence in subsea engineering and operations, building an unrivalled skill base and reputation.
As the oil and gas sector matures, it is essential to harness and retain this wealth of expertise while creating new opportunities for jobs, investment and innovation. This knowledge is critical in supporting the green recovery and driving forward the transition to low-carbon technologies.
What role does the SIG on Subsea Engineering and Operations play in this transition?
Through the SUT-SEO Atlantic & Europe Special Interest Group and the Marine Energy Renewables Committees, we provide a platform for collaboration, knowledge sharing and skills development. Together, we aim to make the energy transition a smooth and rewarding journey while ensuring it remains an attractive career path for the next generation of subsea professionals.
Building a sustainable marine and offshore energy workforce requires strong industry partnerships. The SIG works closely with organisations to strengthen training, support innovation and ensure long-term resilience in the sector.
These include:
- The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA)
- OPITO
- The Global Underwater Hub
- IMarEST
- The Marine Technology Society (MTS)
Linking industry and community impact, these partnerships also align closely on initiatives like the Energy Transition Zone to ensure technological progress goes hand-in-hand with local wellbeing and inclusive growth.
How does the Energy Transition Zone support the community?
Backed by the government, the Energy Transition Zone (ETZ) in Aberdeen will deliver a net zero energy cluster by 2030, creating 2,500 direct jobs and 10,000 wider opportunities. The ETZ will also enrich coastal communities, create civic spaces and ensure inclusive growth. The SUT collaborates with the ETZ to align its role as a learned society, ensuring members benefit from innovation and community impact alike
