The (Second) Energy Upheaval and Data: Head-First Thinking and Learning from Experience

We are in a second energy upheaval! The first occurred when the maritime sector changed simultaneously from sail to steam, and wood to iron. This second is to achieve ‘net zero’. The technologies may be very different, but market need and human nature remain very much the same. How do we better organize ourselves to flush out Unintended Consequences?

Join us as we celebrate our thirteenth annual conference. The MASTS Annual Science Meeting is a cross-disciplinary event that brings together members of the marine science community, with the aim of promoting and communicating research excellence and forging new scientific collaborations. The first two days will bring together expert plenary speakers and contributed talks, panel sessions and posters outlining the latest research and management practices that address key topics related to marine science and management in the face of global climate change. Alongside our general science sessions, the event will include special topic sessions, and plenty of opportunity to enjoy networking with your peers and making new contacts. The first day will also host the annual “Decommissioning & Wreck Removal” workshop.

The third day will be devoted to workshops on:

• Impacts of climate change on marine coastal systems in Scotland to inform climate adaptation
• Image analysis made easy: introduction to a new machine learning software for automatically measuring surface area and species count
• Marine habitats as coastal protection in Scotland: stakeholder engagement workshop
• How can research help progress implementation of marine natural capital approaches and the mainstreaming of Scotland’s Blue Economy Vision?
• Promoting inclusivity in marine science through redefining ways of gaining experience to enter the discipline.
