We’ll have three presenters on the evening:

1. BRIDGING SEAS AND SECTORS: DUAL-USE MARITIME AUTONOMOUS CONTROL SYSTEMS – DRIVING DEFENCE AND OFFSHORE INNOVATIONS IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA

by Harry Hubbert, Greenroom Robotics

In our rapidly evolving technological landscape, the intersection of defence and offshore industries presents unprecedented opportunities for enhancing existing assets through dual-use technologies. Our presentation at this Evening Technical Meeting will focus on the pioneering technologies that bridge the capabilities between defence and civilian applications, particularly in maritime remote and autonomous operations.

Western Australia (WA) stands at the forefront of this technological revolution, uniquely positioned to lead the world in leveraging these innovations. By emphasising the power of collaboration and the converging needs across sectors, we aim to explore the potential for significant advancements and efficiency improvements.

Through a detailed exploration of cutting-edge applications and case studies, I will highlight how dual-use technologies not only enhance operational capabilities but also foster industry-wide opportunities for growth and development. Join me in discovering how WA is set to shape the future of technology, driving both the defence and offshore industries towards a more interconnected and innovative future.

2. DEVELOPMENT OF A LONG ENDURANCE EXTRA LARGE UNCREWED UNDERWATER VEHICLE (XLUUV) FOR DEFENCE PURPOSES

With heightened geopolitical tensions, the current threat to global security is more complex and higher than at any time in recent history. There is a recognised need for Defence to simplify procurement processes, streamline existing programs, react quicker, and ultimately be more agile. As a result, Defence are turning more and more to tried and tested technology from the commercial sector.

Uncrewed Underwater Vehicles (UUV) have been used extensively in the commercial field for the last 30 years, in particular the oil and gas industry, for seabed mapping, debris clearance surveys, monitoring surveys and inspection of infrastructure including jackets, pipelines and subsea cables. Capabilities developed for those applications are directly applicable to many Naval applications, such as intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), mine countermeasures, military survey and inspection / monitoring of critical infrastructure.

My presentation will provide an overview of the development and capabilities of Kongsberg Discovery’s XLUUV, HUGIN Endurance. I will describe the existing proven technology developed for our other HUGIN UUVs since the early 1990’s that was utilised to reduce risk and accelerate development. Additional characteristics and capabilities specific to HUGIN Endurance, which are necessary to enable long term autonomous operations, will also be discussed.

3. WHAT AUKUS MEANS FOR WESTERN AUSTRALIA

by James Cooper-Maitland, Defence Science Centre – Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation

The federal and state governments have developed strategic plans to enhance Western Australia’s role in AUKUS, focusing on infrastructure, workforce development, and industry partnerships. Key initiatives include support for AUKUS Pillar Two, emphasising advanced capabilities like subsea innovation, nuclear technology, and autonomous systems. Local businesses will find opportunities in advanced manufacturing, R&D, and supply chains, with significant benefits for the Henderson Common User Facility. Additionally, WA universities play a crucial role in developing critical research, furthering regional security and economic growth through technological advancements and strategic collaborations.
