Three key positions on the SUT Council will become vacant later this year and we are inviting SUT Individual and Corporate members to express their interest in these Executive Officer roles.

Being an SUT Executive Officer provides the opportunity to lead in the management of the Society, to help shape its strategies and future development, and engage with members and non-members at all levels. We are looking for people with relevant business interests, drive, enthusiasm, and commitment.

Being an SUT Executive Officer is an opportunity open to all ages, enabling you to gain experience on a Board of Directors, working as a Trustee of a Charity, to give back to the industry in which you work, and to share your professional passions. Those nearing the end of their terms of office will happily share their experience so you can hit the ground running, and you will also be supported by the existing members of Council and Executive as you get up to speed.

What is the SUT Council?

The Council is the elected board of directors and trustees for the SUT. Council members are non-executive directors. Members of the SUT Council are listed as directors at Companies House (UK).

What is the SUT Executive?

The Executive Committee of Council (Exec) is a subset of the SUT Council comprised of the Chair, President, Hon Secretary, Hon Treasurer, plus some invited attendees, including the SUT CEO.

Who can stand for election? 
To be eligible for any of the Executive Officer roles, candidates should be an Individual member of the SUT.

If you are not currently an SUT Individual member, you may still stand for election if you are a named Corporate member. Please contact CEO Cheryl Burgess to discuss your eligibility, as it may be possible for you to be co-opted as per the SUT Articles of Association.

Do I need to reside in the UK to join the SUT Council?

Any SUT member globally is eligible to join the Council. Meetings are held online and usually take place at times to accommodate the majority of the Council, typically 1200-1400hrs GMT. Hybrid meetings may be possible. Please bear in mind you may work closely with SUT HQ which is located in the UK.

Will I get paid for my position on the SUT Council?

Council roles are pro-bono and are therefore not paid positions.

How long is the term of office and when will it start?

Elected Executive Officers serve a minimum of one year, however, usually, they will hold office for a three-year term commencing after the SUT Annual General Meeting on 5th December 2024.

Each elected Executive Officer serves as a representative of the SUT membership and as an ambassador for the Society. The positions are pro-bono and akin to non-executive Director status.

How many meetings will I be expected to attend?

SUT Council meets four times a year (January, April, July, October). SUT Exec meets ~10 times a year. Meetings are usually held online. Dates for Council and Exec meetings are planned well in advance.

What if I can’t attend a meeting?

Apologies can be given before the meeting. If a vote or report is required for the meeting these can be submitted to the CEO and Chair ahead of time.

What is the election process?

The Executive Officer roles are elected by the current SUT Council members. Those undertaking Executive roles automatically become SUT Council Members upon appointment at the AGM.

In addition to the roles mentioned above, there will be other opportunities to join the SUT Council. The nominations for election to the SUT Council will open in mid-September.
