About West Africa
The West Africa Branch of the Society for Underwater Technology is being established to provide a focal point for members of the SUT in West Africa and other African States. The Branch is located in Lagos which is known to be the most populous city in Nigeria, with a population of about 25 million; the fastest growing city in Africa and the fifth fastest in the world. As Nigeria’s economic nerve Center with over 3,000 industries, 65% of the country’s commercial activities are carried out in Lagos generating a significant portion of the country’s GDP.
SUT and its members in West Africa have developed strong relationships with industry, academia and individuals with common interest in underwater technology.
The branch will maintain regular calendar of events including meetings, professional development courses, Technical workshop, forums for discussion and more social events, such as the African Energy awards, and the Offshore Achievement Awards.
The branch intends to support Institutions of higher learning in Africa develop capacity in Engineering fields with focus in Underwater Technology and Offshore renewable Energy Technology.
SUT education support scheme will be set up in the various institutions of higher learning to allow easy access to funding for students with interest in underwater technology related programs.
The branch will also continue with the signature SUT subsea awareness courses and encourage regular meetings that will enhance networking and membership of the society.
