Biomimetics for offshore energy harvesting
Weichao Shi, Newcastle University
Weichao is devoted to tidal energy research, specifically by applied biomimetics marine hydrodynamics technologies trying to provide marine industry with inspiring biomimetic solutions. Previously a PhD student at Newcastle, in 2023 he returned as a Reader in Net Zero Maritime Systems.
Weichao will talk about several aspects of biomimetics applied to tidal turbines and associated foils and propulsors. Expect a mix of innovative CFD and experimental findings!
See https://www.abmhydro.com/ for more information On Weichao’s research group
Biofouling and offshore renewables
Chang Li, Newcastle University
Chang is a researcher in marine hydrodynamics and has a wealth of experimental expertise of Newcastle’s marine research facilities, especially on projects associated to biofouling control and the effect on performance of marine technologies.
Chang will talk about biofouling and the specific challenges to offshore renewable devices, referencing his current work on the MUE-Drive project – a novel tidal energy generator.
