Lunch & Learn – Improving industry practice through research collaborations

Hosted by The University of Western AustraliaShell Chair in Offshore Engineering | TIDE Research Hub

ABOUT THE LUNCH & LEARN

Join in for this free Lunch and Learn session where industry experts & researchers will share insights from recent activities – then stay for a light lunch and networking with colleagues from across the offshore sector.

Host Phil Watson, a familiar face at SUT events will set the scene with an overview of ongoing UWA initiatives – which will form the basis for future talks in this series. After Phil’s opening remarks, there will be two insightful presentations. Check out each presenter’s bio and abstract below. This is a great opportunity for the offshore community to come together and connect over ground-breaking research and a sandwich – don’t miss out!

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Presentation 1 – Reducing uncertainty one spoonful at a time

By Andrew Rathbone, Engineering Authority – Wood Australia

Abstract:
Confirming the integrity of free-spanning subsea pipelines is an ongoing challenge to the local industry. This talk will give an overview of the uncertainty in the data required to analyse the potential for VIV-induced fatigue in subsea pipelines and how TIDE is helping to address some of the key items.

Biography: Chartered Mechanical Engineer, joined Wood over 20 years ago as a graduate in London, with a work-induced move to Perth in 2006. Currently combines a pipelines engineering authority role alongside work in developing the next generation of Woods digital capabilities.

Presentation 2 – Offshore jacket structures, re-imagined

By Aidan Archer, Forrest PhD Scholar – ARC Research Hub, TIDE, UWA

Abstract:
Jacket structures have been around since the dawn of offshore oil drilling, so, by now we should know how they are most efficiently designed, right…? Wrong! In this talk, Aidan will reveal why the hydrodynamic loads from waves and current are over-estimated in engineering standards, leading to an over design of jackets. At the dawn of Australia’s offshore wind industry and a renewed demand for jackets, Aidan will share new research that is resolving this problem.

Biography:
After 4 years of engineering and technology consulting across the oil & gas and mining industries, in 2023 Aidan commenced his PhD candidature at UWA in offshore hydrodynamics to pursue his passion for the oceans. Aidan was also SUT-Perth’s 2023/24 Marine Renewable Energy Scholarship winner.
