Why Subsea Industry data matters for COP28
The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 project is a global initiative to map 100% of the world’s seabed by 2030
The ocean is the heart of our planet; feeds us, regulates our climate, and generate most of the oxygen we breathe, it covers 70% of the planet and provides 97% of the worlds water resources as well as jobs, livelihoods and economic development. And yet we know comparatively little about it …
To complete the global subsea map, Seabed 2030 partner Victor Vescovo (of Five Deeps fame) estimates that it requires 185 years of ship time, and around $2.6 billion – not impossible but a challenge. Marine robotic systems will be key to delivering the task, and with constantly improving platforms, sensors, sonars and bandwidth we can expect to see the task made a little easier in future years.

Seabed 2030 is a UN Ocean Decade initiative to map 100% of the seafloor – three-quarters of the global ocean floor is unmapped to modern standards, especially in the southern hemisphere, and without good maps the tasks of ocean modeling, geohazard prediction, understanding global heating and managing human use of natural resources is made more difficult, with less certainty in results and less reliable future predictions.
Recognising the importance of a wholly mapped ocean to climate change mitigation, ocean and coastal resilience, and a sustainable blue economy, Fugro has been leading private-sector support for The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project (Seabed 2030) since its early planning stages.
