Offshore 2050 – The Future Now

Wednesday 1 October | 18:00 – 19:30

Institution of Civil Engineers, London, SW1P 3AA

Free of charge

Back in 1985, Marty McFly jumped into a DeLorean and travelled to the year 2015. We don’t have a time machine, but our speakers have imagined the future and are here to report back on the state of the offshore oil and gas, wind, and cable industries in the year 2050.

2050 may seem a long way away but it is within the career spans of those at the start of their careers (and probably those with up to 15 years’ experience, depending on retirement age).

What will the offshore industries look like in 2050? Will there still be an oil and gas industry or will it be a ghost of the past? Will the seas be filled with giant wind farms scrapping for wind energy? Will energy be sent via giant subsea cables between countries to balance supply and demand?

What are the offshore engineering challenges ahead of us and are we ready to tackle these challenges? And will we have achieved net zero greenhouse emissions?

Gain valuable insights into future trends and explore ground breaking ideas at this forward-looking event.

Speakers:

Pratyush Kumar is a Chartered Marine Engineer with over 16 years of experience in subsea engineering.  As a Lead Subsea Pipeline Engineer at Wood Plc’s Staines office, he has contributed to major subsea projects globally, spanning all phases from concept to detailed design through to operations support.  His diverse background, including roles with both installation contractors and engineering consultancies, provides him with a comprehensive understanding of project delivery.  Pratyush specialises in subsea pipeline design, field layout development and finite element analysis and is passionate about sharing practical insights from his extensive project experience.

Remote Underwater Operations complementing and assisting the Energy Transition – Offshore Europe

This event will be held during Offshore Europe at P&J Live Aberdeen.  You must register for Offshore Europe to attend this event.

Friday 5 September | 11:50-12:20 | Energy Transition Theatre, P&J Live

The maritime and underwater environment is changing with the adoption of remote operations through technological advancement. The continued growth of the offshore energy sector is uniquely positioned to capitalise on the capabilities of remote operations.

Remote crewing operations allow the opportunity for offshore personnel to be based onshore without reducing the offshore vessel’s functionality. Through strong and reliable control, communication and automation systems, this offers opportunities to remove humans from critical areas and reduce operational cost.

Uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) are increasingly capable of over the horizon activities and with this advancement in proven technology the demands on payload, vessel size and activities undertaken has correspondingly increased. USVs are now considered the solution of first choice in many applications.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) have advanced considerably in recent years with commercial deployments undertaken by free flying vehicles on programmed missions and with residency solutions using tethered solution to complete missions without need to return to surface. The use of AUVs has mitigated the requirement for conventional support vessels to be deployed offshore to undertake the underwater activities.

Our speakers will share their latest technological capabilities and outline their visions for the future both near and long term.

Offshore Wind – The SUT’s role in sharing Knowledge and Experience – Offshore Europe

This event will be held during Offshore Europe at P&J Live Aberdeen.  You must register for Offshore Europe to attend this event.

Thursday 4 September | 11:50-12:20 | Offshore Wind Theatre, P&J Live

As the offshore wind energy industry moves from the mature shallow fixed bottom developments to deeper waters and floating structures the SUT is best (uniquely?) placed to help with the many challenges with setting standards ,training and sharing of expertise as set out in this session.

Our SIG for Offshore Site Investigation sets the industry standards for the extensive site characterisation now required for floating turbines and delivers world class hands-on training courses.

Similarly our Offshore Wind course gives a useful insight to the industry from experts on surveys/permitting through to construction and Operations/IMR. All combined with site visits. Our established Subsea Awareness course covers SS IMR.

Safely mooring floating structures with dynamic power cables has many similar challenges to the oil and gas sector, we encourage knowledge sharing with our focussed technical seminars on this challenging area.ctive”

Insights and Highlights: The Developing Professionals Guide to SUT Training, Education and Career Development – Offshore Europe

Wednesday 3 September| 11:40-12:10 | Future Talent Hub, P&J Live

The Blue Economy offers practitioners a long and varied career path, however attracting and retaining talent is key.

The SUT has established the SUT+ specifically created for developing professionals, graduates and students by developing professionals working in the subsea industry. The aim is to increase newcomers’ engagement and understanding of the underwater technology and related sectors and markets. SUT+ provides a platform to develop both valuable industry knowledge outside the traditional office environment and a personal professional network

The SUT works closely with learning institutions to tailor their undergraduate courses and post graduate research to ensure that strong academic learning is combined with industry relevant knowledge and expertise to ensure that developing professionals can thrive in the workplace.

In this session, SUT will share the experiences from the SUT+ talent pool, outlining activities undertaken and the invaluable benefits gained. In addition, speakers from local institutions will share views on how industry and academia work together to enable and maintain the talent pipeline.
