The Second Energy Upheaval

We are in a second energy upheaval! The first occurred when the maritime sector changed, simultaneously, from sail to steam and wood to iron. The London market in the form of Lloyds responded to this. Today, in a very similar frenzy, this time to achieve ‘Net Zero’, the technologies may be very different, but insurance and investment market-need, and human nature remain very much the same. There is no less need for thorough understanding of endeavour in order to classify and therefore price the patterns of risk, but, today, operation is far removed from the commercial instruments that makes it possible, and few in the insurance, indemnifying and investment markets have practical, in-depth knowledge of the people involved and their practices. How to tackle this?

A Collaborative, Digital Response

The D’Arcy Thompson Simulator Centre as a provider of sustainability assurance, the London City Branch of the SUT as a learned society, Beazley as underwriters, the Waves Group as warranty surveyors working in maritime and oil and gas, and IQ3 Connect, providers of a collaborative VR platform, are holding an event at Lloyds Lab to explore how A CANVAS (Abstraction, Calculation, Analysis, modelliNg, Visualization, Animation and Simulation) can help ensure that test design is complete, and residual risk adequately identified.

Focus of Practical Workshop

Two, short presentations covering electricity generation scenarios and ESG will be followed by a hands-on exercise using collaborative VR, followed by examples of where Visualization and Simulation has informed academic research, operations and spatial planning.

Dr Rotimi Alabi is the founder and CEO of RAB-Microfluidics, a company he founded off the back of his PhD at the University of Aberdeen to solve the machine reliability and availability challenges of businesses across many industries. During his PhD, Dr Alabi developed a microfluidic lab-on-a-chip technology which automates and digitises the process of oil condition monitoring. Join us as we celebrate our thirteenth annual conference. The MASTS Annual Science Meeting is a cross-disciplinary event that brings together members of the marine science community, with the aim of promoting and communicating research excellence and forging new scientific collaborations. The first two days will bring together expert plenary speakers and contributed talks, panel sessions and posters outlining the latest research and management practices that address key topics related to marine science and management in the face of global climate change. Carbon capture, utilisation and storage is a key element of the global toolkit to manage carbon emissions and support the movement to net zero.  The UK and Europe are at the forefront of this nascent industry, identifying and overcoming the challenges that the transport of carbon dioxide poses in the management of flow regimes, product specifications, and equipment design to achieve the aspirations for carbon sequestration.  This evening event will provide an opportunity to understand some of these challenges and solutions.

CO2 Storage in Depleted Gas Reservoirs

Depleted gas reservoirs are recognised as one of the most promising candidates for carbon dioxide storage. Primary gas production followed by injection of carbon dioxide after depletion is the strategy adopted for secure long term storage benefiting from high seal integrity in this reservoirs. The efficiency of such operation would depend on the reservoir characteristics, depletion pressure and injection strategies. There have been several studies (and some ongoing research work) referring to different critical factors influencing the reservoir performance, while less attention has been paid to operational challenges when considering the full integration of transport and storage cycles. In this presentation we would focus on challenges associated with CO2 transport and injection into gas depleted reservoirs and lessons learnt from our recent projects and studies.

Why CO2/H2 transport is of increasing importance – SUT+ webinar

Craig McKay is a lead flow assurance engineer with Wood, providing consulting services to the energy industry. He a decade of experience working on a variety of projects globally, from concept select through to detailed design. Craig has been heavily involved in Wood’s energy transition activities, with significant experience in the design of CO2 and hydrogen transport systems for various European clients. In addition to international conference papers, Craig has also recently co-authored “good practice guidelines for CCS equation of state selection” in conjunction with the Energy Institute and other partners.

Presentation overview:

The presentation provides an overview of CO2/H2 transportation, including some of the unique challenges of design and operation when compared to traditional oil and gas systems. This includes a review of specific fluid challenges which must be addressed, such as the impact of impurities, and examples of operational risks unique to CO2/H2 transport.

The Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) delivers a foundation-level Subsea Awareness Course (SAC) that is suitable for personnel across the full spectrum: Operators / Developers, Contractors, Technology suppliers and other interested organisations, for example; Government, Legal, Finance, and Engineering Houses.

This course provides underpinning knowledge for new entrants in the subsea sector of the offshore energy industry, as well as offering a refresher for experienced professionals seeking to update their knowledge.

Course Description

The course is delivered by experienced personnel from across the sector from Operators / Developers, Contractors and Technology Suppliers many of whom are recognised authorities within their organisations providing deep insight to the complete lifecycle of a subsea asset in both oil and gas and offshore renewables; covering design, installation, operations and ultimately decommissioning.

The course offers a balance of classroom and site visits to manufacturing plants and operating centres, thereby providing a broad spectrum of opportunity to engage and share knowledge with our highly experienced and respected industry personnel.

  • The course has been run by the SUT since early 1990s, with continual refreshing to reflect the changing technological developments over the period and is geared for industry personnel who wish to expand their knowledge of offshore energy subsea systems.
  • The modules are delivered by experienced personnel from Operators, Contractors and Technology System Suppliers to offer broad and ranging perspectives of the sector.
  • Whilst most of the course will be presented in a ‘classroom’ environment, the sessions will be interactive, with the opportunity to ask questions and discuss what has been learned. In particular, hands-on and visual components have been included wherever possible to enable delegates to view software models and products designed for subsea service.

  • New Entrants who are already technically qualified but are just entering the offshore energy industry and / or the subsea sector
  • Technically qualified, experienced personnel who require to undergo a technology transfer and conversion process from another relevant discipline into the subsea sector
