COBRA Rebreather

A joint presentation by Allan Nairn, Director of Diving, Rever Offshore & Graeme Clark, JFD Global

Emergency divers bailout breathing gas has long been an emotive topic in the saturation diving industry. Conventional Scuba-type bailouts provide very limited gas to divers operating at saturation diving depths, and should the divers primary gas supply be lost, he will invariably have only a very short time to return to the safety of the diving bell. The new COBRA (Compact Bailout Rebreather Apparatus) developed by JFD provides a simple, highly reliable and fully independent breathing system offering the diver extended bailout duration to return safely to the diving bell.

Following extensive development and testing, and award of CE certification (PPE), COBRA has been successfully launched within the saturation diving industry and deployed for the first time in 2018 by Rever Offshore in support of their North Sea operations. This presentation gives an insight into this important new development in saturation diving safety as well as an overview of the feedback received and lessons learned by the contractor following this first deployment in the North Sea.

Safety Assurance of Automated Dive Vessels:                                      The Last 10 Years v The Next 10 Years

Ed Gardyne, MD, Safewell Solutions

Automation (digitalisation) is increasingly ubiquitous in every sector of industry including the commercial diving industry. This provides both opportunities for greater safety and reliability but also presents new types of risks.

Safewell has been working with major operators in the oil and gas sector since 2008 helping the industry manage the lifecycle safety of automation used in commercial dive systems. During this period the most advanced commercial diving vessels ever built have been mobilised presenting a challenge to conventional lifecycle audits and assurance methods.

An overview of the topic will be provided drawing on learning and experiences of the last 10 years with some brief thoughts on the future of automated dive systems.

Real World Operational Experiences of Diving Utilising the Novel    “Mother – Daughter” Solution

Hamish Peterson, MD, KD Marine

Real world experience and case study utilising a mother daughter solution to perform diving operations in the UKCS North Sea.

The intervention of divers is sometimes required on offshore facilities and often in some very inaccessible places. What are the typical tasks which required such intervention? What tasks can be achieved and how are the challenges overcome to ensure success.

NASA in Aberdeen – From Inner Space (Subsea) to Outer Space

NASA in Aberdeen – Inspiring the Next Generation 2019

Come along to this exciting presentation – “From Inner Space (Subsea) to Outer Space”, at Robert Gordon’s College and discover how technology and expertise developed for the oil and gas industry transforms human and robotic space exploration – past, present and future!

This talk will be delivered by a NASA Engineer/Scientist and former NASA astronaut Carl Walz, who flew four spaceflight missions on the Space Shuttle and Space Station, logging 231 total days in space!  Mr. Walz is now Director of Business Development for Oceaneering.

Carl will discuss how underwater training made spacewalks by astronauts and cosmonauts safe and efficient, and how technologies developed for Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) subsea applications have enabled robotic servicing of the International Space Station (ISS) and will enable future robotic satellite servicing far beyond the reach of astronauts!

Diversity and Inclusion in practice – when the rubber hits the road!

A personal and corporate journey

Come and have lunch on TechnipFMC and ROSEN as Nat and Adrian share from personal and corporate experience which will hopefully benefit/benchmark your own endeavours to make oil and gas/engineering a more inclusive industry.

Adrian will share from his personal and professional background and drawing from this, will relate his experience to diversity decisions. Building on these decisions, he will also present ‘soundbites’ in the mentoring and professional development space.

Nat will share a little of her personal experience and explore TechnipFMC’s diversity journey leading to the SEA Diversity award in 2018, what worked and what did not, and the organisation’s current focus and future challenges.

Composite Pressure Vessel Validation – PDL Solutions (Europe) Ltd

Andy Christie – PDL Engineer
Composite materials have been adopted for a huge number of applications, from a Formula 1 car chassis through to cutting edge bicycle frames.
In many instances, the motivation to adopt composites is a reduction in weight, with no loss in structural strength, when compared to traditional ferrous and non-ferrous metallic materials.
In this presentation we will identify the tools and techniques applied to the design, validation and testing of composite pressure vessels manufactured from filament winding.
We’ll bring samples of the final products, used in offshore rescue situations, for you to pick up and try for size!

Flexible Pipe Composite Pressure Armour Qualification

Vineet Jha – Principal Engineer BHGE
To meet future challenges faced by offshore oil and gas industry, especially in deeper water, the introduction of composite materials is considered essential. Hence, BHGE is developing hybrid composite riser for ultra-deep-water floating production systems, typically found in offshore Brazil and West Africa.
The oil and gas industry is highly regulated and the introduction of new technologies requires significant investment in qualification and validation. Qualification of traditional flexible pipe and newer thermoplastic composite pipe is covered by established International Standards API 17J/API17B and DNV-RP-F119.
However the BHGE solution is a hybrid product not fully covered by either standard.
This presentation shows the BHGE approach to qualification of this unique product, ensuring adherence to relevant requirements of both API 17B/17J and DNV-RP-F119 and providing a robust and safe introduction to the market.
