A path to a globally successful marine energy industry
The European Marine Energy Centre, based in Orkney, has been operational for over 15 years. As a full scale, grid-connected, marine energy converter test site, it has witnessed numerous prototype testing.
This presentation will cover some of the historic testing at EMEC, present testing and a look to the future. The presentation will also look at the wider wave & tidal industry and opportunities for the supply chain that may come about.
Jonathan Lindsay
Jonathan Lindsay is currently working at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney as Operations and Technology Director. EMEC is a marine renewable energy test centre and research organisation.
After completion of his PhD in Rock Mechanics at Strathclyde University, Jonathan took roles in a number of companies, starting in geotechnical engineering and then concentrating on operations management within offshore design and construction projects. Jonathan has been involved in Subsea Engineering since the early 1990’s. Whilst his career was mostly spent in the Oil & Gas industry, more recently it has been spent in offshore renewables.

Deep Sea Exploration
Dr Alan Jamieson, Newcastle University
The Five Deeps Expedition is the first to attempt to reach the deepest point in each of the Earth’s five oceans: the Puerto Rico Trench in the Atlantic, South Sandwich Trench in the Southern Ocean, Java Trench in the Indian Ocean, Challenger Deep in the Pacific and Molloy Deep in the Arctic.
Dr Alan Jamieson is a senior lecturer in deep-sea biology at Newcastle University, UK. He is the Chief Scientist on The Five Deeps Expedition.
His research has made him a world leader in the biological exploration of the Hadal Zone (depths exceeding 6000 metres). He has designed multiple Hadal-Landers and has deployed them nearly 250 times in the ultra-deep subduction trenches of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding areas. He has participated in, and often led, 50 deep-sea expeditions covering every ocean. He has published over 80 scientific papers and sole authored the book The Hadal Zone, life in the deepest oceans, in 2015. The highlights of his work include filming the deepest fish in the world multiple times, discovering supergiant amphipods in the Hadal Zone, having a Hadal species named after him and filming in the deepest places on Earth, the Sirena Deep and Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench.
His work has featured in the BBC’s Blue Planet II, and NHK’s Deep Ocean, Descent into the Mariana Trench documentaries, and his discoveries have received extensive international media coverage.
He is a fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and currently sits on the council of the Challenger Society for Marine Science.

This course has been developed by flexible pipe manufacturers and key companies associated with system design, failure mode analysis, and integrity management of flexible flowlines and risers.
The course is aimed at those who specify, purchase, approve, install, operate, manage the integrity of, or decommission flexible risers or flowlines, including jumpers.
The course should provide enough knowledge for them to feel comfortable with their responsibilities and is likely to apply to both engineers and non-engineers at various stages in their careers.
To register for the course please return the course flyer via email to Patricia Slapp

Saving The London: a Mary Rose for the 21st century
On the 7th March 1665 tragedy struck in the Thames Estuary, when the warship London exploded with the loss of over 300 souls. Today, over 350 years later, the tragedy continues as the wreck site washes away with every passing ship and tide. In 2019 the Nautical Archaeology Society, the London Shipwreck Trust and Southend Borough Council launched the “Save The London” Campaign, to support the recovery, excavation, conservation and display of the protected wreck in a purpose-built facility in Southend-on-Sea. This presentation will provide the background to the ships loss; its rediscovery; the work of the dedicated team of volunteer divers who are saving artefacts from destruction as well as the innovative scheme to recover the ship from the Thames.
