This program is provided free of charge to students due to the generosity of our sponsors. The program includes morning tea and lunch. Students are encouraged to pack their own snacks during the week. Successful applicants will be asked to place a deposit of A$100 via bank transfer. This deposit will be refunded on completion of the program. Refunds will not be provided for cancellations within five days of program start, no-shows or partial program completion without adequate justification.

13th International SUT China Technical Conference

Offshore oil and gas and green energy are major resources to ensure a sustainable industrial development in the future. This event aims to build an open platform for technological exchange, promote the progress of global marine resources exploration and development technology, promote international cooperation between Chinese and foreign universities, enterprises and research institutions, and further enhance the cooperation and exchanges between Chinese universities and enterprises involved in maritime affairs, the 13th International SUT (China) Technical Conference will be held in Tianjin, China, from November 1 to 4, 2024. Well-known domestic academicians will attend as consultants of the conference, and we would like to extend our warmest invitation to experts and scholars from domestic and abroad engaged in scientific research, education, production, application, and other disciplines to discuss the development of offshore resources, engineering equipment and related industrial topics.

The annual SUT China Technical Conference was initiated by SUT China Branch and 12 sessions have been successfully held in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Qingdao, Beijing, Zhoushan, Changsha, Dalian and Haikou, which have been highly recognized by experts and scholars.

Connecting Onshore to Offshore with SMD Horizon

Dr Andrew Ambrose-Thurman, Lead Engineer – Autonomous Systems, SMD

Andrew has worked on R&D projects ranging from giant radioactive subsea pipe scanners, to solar-powered racing cars, to award-winning autonomous robot swarms for mapping the seabed. He’s currently leading the development of SMD’s new Horizon system, for remote controlling subsea vehicles from anywhere in the world via the cloud.

This talk will give an overview of the Horizon project and show some of the benefits that connecting Onshore to Offshore can bring to you.

Automation Through Digital Solutions

Dylan Jones, Data Scientist and Optimisation Specialist, Kinewell Energy

Kinewell Energy develop optimisation tools for planning and designing offshore wind farms. This talk will cover the range of benefits we can get from automation and digitisation, stressing the vital need for such solutions in meeting net zero targets. Using Kinewell’s software as examples we will explore various design challenges associated with offshore wind developments.

Mick Cook, Director MCL Consultancy

From MSc to MD – Lessons Learned On The Way!

Presenter’s Biography: Since completing his MSc in 1979, Mick has spent 45 years working as a marine site investigation geophysicist in the energy sector. Initially working as a contractor, Mick joined the embryonic consultancy Hydrosearch, in 1984. Over the next 20 years, he assisted the company as a partner and director in building the business into one of the largest geoscience/environmental consultancies in the world. Hydrosearch was bought by RPS in 2003. Mick was appointed MD of the newly formed RPS Energy and, over the next five years helped grow the business 10-fold. In 2008 Mick semi-retired and set up his own consultancy – MCL.

Abstract: Mick has enjoyed almost every one of the 45 years spent working as an SI geophysicist in the offshore energy sector. During this time, he has seen many changes in the site investigation business from pre-computer, pre-GPS, pre-internet, etc to today’s highly sophisticated and highly valued business. Mick has been fortunate to have worked globally with exceptional ‘can-do’ people and has enjoyed a modicum of success from lowly days spent ‘in the field’ to developing, running, and, latterly, assisting businesses by sitting on a number of boards as a non-executive director during semi-retirement. Along the way, Mick has learned many lessons; one of the biggest being ‘it is not just about the science’. Before retiring fully, Mick is keen to share his learnings with young/early career geoscientists, enabling them to enjoy the success that Mick has experienced.

Dr Aggeliki Georgiopoulou, Geoscience Manager at Ternan Energy

Transferable Skills Between Academia and Industry

Presenter’s Biography: Aggie is a Marine Geologist with more than 20 years of experience in researching seabed geohazards. She gained her PhD from the University of Southampton and the National Oceanography Centre and moved on to a post-doc at Cardiff University (3DLab) as part of the CAPROCKS industry-funded consortium. She was a senior lecturer at University College Dublin and the University of Brighton. She is a Fulbright scholar alumna, having spent half a year at the US Geological Survey in Woods Hole, Massachusetts in 2018.

Aggie has published extensively on offshore geohazards and the marine record of the Quaternary offshore UK and Ireland. She has supervised and examined several graduate and postgraduate projects. She has participated in numerous offshore oceanographic expeditions and has been Chief Scientist herself on several occasions on the Irish national Research Vessel Celtic Explorer.

This is the 11th iteration of this meeting, the third time we have co-located three events, and the second time we have added on our Surface Fleet Technology meeting. It is a pleasure to welcome you once more to Farnborough, which with its size and links will be our home for the foreseeable future. We are looking to welcome >1,500 attendees representing >50 nations and >200 companies.

It will have been a year since we last met and the maritime environment is emerging as key priority for NATO and its partners. Future Surface Fleet developments, ensuring comprehensive Underwater Defence and Security, and maintaining world beating Submarine Technology and Surface Fleet Technology are central tenants to this. The combination of the four help countries to develop their maritime capabilities, ensure freedom of navigation is not threatened and when necessary, sea control and denial are achieved.

The intent is for a wide cross-section of attendees from international navies, defence industry, academia to explore how to align in common purpose that assures naval capabilities match to the strategic, operational, technological opportunities and demands of the future.
