The 105th meeting of SUTGEF will be held at 14:00 on Wednesday, 14 January 2015 in Room C309 of City University, Northampton Square, London, EC1V 0HB
The technical presentations and summaries are as follows:
Dr. Peter Lai: Engineering Forecasts and Monitoring for Offshore Construction Operations
As an established leader in marine construction, Saipem Limited is committed to performing offshore installation and decommissioning operations in a safe and cost effective manner. In the harsh environment of the North Sea and North Atlantic sea areas, the ability of forecasting the governing engineering criteria during the marine operations becomes an essential component to success. This allows us to be able to take advantage of the first available weather opportunity for a well-planned marine operation. The developed methodology and a summary of the status of the development, including its limitations and applications will be presented. It will be focused in three areas: forecast and monitor the dynamic motion characteristics of the operation, pile stick-up motion for jacket installation, and prediction of sagbend bending moment during subsea pipeline construction. It will be concluded by presenting the proposed future development and advantages.
Dr Benedict Rogers: Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH): latest developments for violent flows and impacts
Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a meshless method ideally suited to flows with highly nonlinear characteristics. This has led to wide reaching applications in many areas of engineering. In this seminar we will present some of the latest developments in the method for free-surface flows pioneered at The University of Manchester. Despite its many successes, SPH still has some key areas requiring significant development which we will explore. At the end of the seminar we will touch upon some of the more exotic areas of application.
Non-members are also welcome.
