Floating Tidal: Ahead of the Curve
In addition to a huge global market opportunity the harnessing of tidal stream energy offers multiple benefits should technological solutions be capable of delivering low cost and low risk electricity. However the engineering challenges and constraints of constructing and operating turbines in highly aggressive tidal streams, for which there is limited existing experience, has meant the sector has yet to transition from research and development programmes to fully commercial projects. Scottish based Scotrenewables Tidal Power Ltd has recently started the test and demonstration of its first, full-scale floating tidal turbine, the world’s largest operating tidal turbine, which could hold the keys to enabling low cost tidal energy for this emerging sector. This presentation will explore the unique aspects of this exciting technology which give rise to a very different risk proposition for the tidal market.
Presenter Andrew Scott
Andrew has been working in the marine renewable space for nearly 15 years; active at the leading edge of two pioneering Scottish R&D programmes which have seen more than £100m invested in technology innovation, skills development and supply chain capability. Prior to joining Scotrenewables Tidal Power as CEO in 2015 he worked with Pelamis Wave Power for over ten years. Throughout this time Andrew has been involved on both commercial and technical aspects of technology development as well as working within representative bodies for the renewables sector. He has a degree in mechanical engineering from Strathclyde University and a postgraduate MSc in Energy from Heriot-Watt University.

All Learned Members of the SUT are invited to attend the London and South East Branch’s 4th Annual Pub Quiz at the Ye Olde Watling, 29 Watling Street, EC4M 9BR. Planned start time 7pm, probable finish time 10pm with a buffet served between rounds.
Corporate Members are invited to send teams (5 person teams are ideal) with suitably knowing names; individual members can form a winning team on the night. Our usual quiz masters will be standing down this year to join the confused masses and will be replaced by Johnathan Linfoot.
There is a limit on 60 attendees due to space restrictions at the venue and as such all teams and persons are encouraged to pre-register to avoid bitter disappointment on the night.
Following the quiz, there will be ample opportunity to toast success or drown sorrows at the bar.

Commander Chris Lade Royal Navy (Retd) joined the Royal Navy in 1980 commanding HMS Middleton in 1994 and the RN Diving School 2004. He participated in Mine Countermeasures Operations in the Arabian Gulf during the Iran/Iraq War and worked closely with the US Navy during MCM Operations in the Second Gulf War. Now retired and working for Saab Seaeye in the development of unmanned underwater vehicles he remains committed to improving the efficiency and safety of Underwater Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Mine Countermeasures.

Offshore Floating Wind – Evolution or Revolution?
Our speakers for the evening are Mike McMahon, Deputy Managing Director – Energy UK, at Charles Taylor Adjusting and Alex Argyros, Senior Engineer, at DNV GL.
The technology involved in conventional piled offshore windfarms is now well established and understood within the renewable energy sector.
Whilst some countries, such as the UK, are blessed with shallow coastal waters ideally suited to conventional offshore wind, others such as Japan have only deep water close to shore.
To harness power from wind in these environments will require the development of wind farms in deeper water and in more hostile environments, necessitating the use of floating structures.
The presenters will discuss whether the development of floating windfarms presents new and unique engineering challenges or whether they are simply an evolution of offshore deep water oil and gas platforms.
Some of the lessons learned from recent major offshore insurance claims will also be explored. Following that, the presenters will discuss what is currently happening within the offshore wind industry to try and mitigate the technical challenges that offshore wind poses

The Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) delivers a foundation level Subsea Awareness Course (SAC) that is suitable for personnel from the Operators, the Contractors and other interested organisations, for example; Legal, Finance and Engineering Houses.
This course provides underpinning knowledge for new entrants in the subsea sector of the offshore energy industry, as well as offering a refresher for experienced professionals seeking to update their knowledge.
Course Description
The course is delivered by experienced personnel from across the sector from Operators, Contractors and Technology Suppliers, many of whom are recognised Technical Authorities (TA), and address’ the complete lifecycle of a subsea asset; looking at design, installation, commissioning production operations and the ultimate decommissioning from reservoir to export.
The course offers a balance of classroom and site visits to manufacturing plants/factories, thereby providing a broad spectrum of opportunity to engage from our highly experienced and respected industry personnel, sharing their knowledge.
- This five-day course was originally developed by the Operator community to address growing skills gaps, which due to its success was transferred to the Society of Underwater Technology in the early 1990’s as the industry learned society for the subsea sector; a non-profit making organisation. Since then, the SAC has been developed and refreshed to reflect the technological developments over the period and is geared for industry personnel who wish to expand their knowledge of subsea systems within the offshore and subsea sector
- The modules are delivered by experienced personnel from Operators, Contractors and Technology System Suppliers to offer a broad perspective of the sector, many industry Technical Authorities – sharing their knowledge.
- The course is especially relevant for new entrants to the subsea sector but can also be invaluable to those transferring from other disciplines within the industry, or personnel who have worked in subsea earlier in their career and appreciate the benefit to be had from a refresher course that includes exposure to the latest technological advances from Reservoir to Export.

An event exploring how ocean observations improve ocean, weather and climate prediction enabling better informed business decisions at sea, on land and in the air.
The oceans drive our weather and climate. Emerging capabilities in coupled ocean atmosphere modelling are improving our ability to predict weather and project climate change, with consequent benefits to business activity in the oceans, on the land and in the air.
By bringing together data and delivering the tools needed to increase our understanding of the connections between the ocean and weather, we can better predict when and where severe weather will strike.
Better predictions of the ocean and atmosphere mean safer and more profitable businesses and enhanced protection of the environment.
By reducing the uncertainties in projections of climate change, we can improve understanding of longer term business risks. Effective use of ocean observations and measurements is key to providing critical information to those operating in the oceans as well as for those far removed from the coast.
