Allseas is known for her flagship vessel the Pioneering Spirit and her single lift technology, the Topsides Lift System (TLS).
This talk will present CNRI’s Ninian Northern Platform topsides removal project as a case study concentrating on the work that goes on in the background that makes single lift possible.
The main focus areas will be:
- The challenges dealing with aging offshore assets
- Completing preparations amid competing plug & abandonment activities
- Creative solutions for separating and lifting separating topsides from their jackets
- Executing a single lift
- Transferring an asset onshore with a transport barge and heavy lift skidding system

The talk will present Boskalis’s experience as a subsea contractor across completed and ongoing decommissioning projects.
Within subsea sector, this remit covers all subsea infrastructure, including: pipelines, risers, subsea structures, concrete mattresses, debris, associated seabed remediation.
The primary content of the presentation will be on the “lifecycle model” of Boskalis’s ongoing project with the Chrysaor, their legacy ConocoPhilips Subsea Decommissioning, while focusing on:
- Lessons learned
- Efficiencies
- Best practices
- Different lifecycle models of subsea decommissioning

Scottish Government have committed to make hydrogen a key element of Scotland’s decarbonisation plans. The recently published Hydrogen Policy Statement included a target of generating 5 GW of renewable and low carbon hydrogen in Scotland by 2030.
In 2020 Scottish Government, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Scottish Enterprise, commissioned Arup to carry out a hydrogen assessment which formed a key aspect of the evidence base informing their policies on hydrogen. The assessment investigated how and where hydrogen may fit within the evolving energy system technically, geographically and economically. A key part of the Hydrogen Assessment was the development of distinct viable scenarios for hydrogen deployment in Scotland and the economic assessment of those scenarios. This work identified the crucial role for hydrogen in helping Scotland decarbonise, and the need for Scotland to urgently capitalise on the opportunity in front of it.
Clare Lavelle will present on the role of hydrogen in realising a secure, flexible, cost effective and low carbon energy network, which supports a green economic recovery. She will explain how Arup’s assessment identified the opportunities for Scotland to play a key role in a critical growing global market.
Speaker Background
Clare Lavelle leads Arup’s Scottish Energy business and is a Non-Executive Director of Scottish Renewables.
She has extensive experience in the Scottish and UK energy sector and has been central to the development of major energy infrastructure and innovation in the UK and Scotland. Clare’s current focus is on the transition of energy systems and developing solutions that cut across industries to enable deep decarbonisation of heat, transport and electricity, with a particular focus on hydrogen.
This includes leading the design and development of SGN’s H100 project in Levenmouth Fife. This world first demonstration of hydrogen production and distribution will supply 100% green hydrogen to circa 300 homes for domestic use. She works closely with government and regulators to shape policy. Clare led the Scottish Hydrogen Assessment Project – a key part of the evidence
base to inform Scottish Government’s developing hydrogen policy. She is also currently supporting Crown Estates Scotland on ScotWind leasing round.
Clare has won several awards including the Top 50 women engineers in sustainability, the Karen Burt Memorial Award, and she has an honorary doctorate from the University of Vaasa.

Speaker – Joseph Nicolette, Vice President, Planning and Ecosystem Services Division Lead
Mr. Nicolette will present an overview of a NEBA-CA; ecosystem services; and their application to offshore decommissioning. Mr. Nicolette has 30 years of experience in the development of NEBA and its expanded application into the offshore decommissioning arena. He co-authored the first formalised framework for NEBA, incorporating ecosystem services. His experience includes NEBA and ecosystem service experience in over 15 countries with offshore decommissioning associated work in the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Australia, and the Gulf of Thailand.
A NEBA-CA is a comparative assessment approach that assists stakeholders in balancing the risks, benefits and trade-offs associated with competing alternatives. For example, within the decommissioning process, competing alternatives can include complete removal, partial removal, conversion to other uses (e.g., rigs to reefs), or a combination of these alternatives. A NEBA-CA is like a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) in that it is a systematic process for quantifying and comparing the benefits, risks, and costs between competing alternatives. However, a NEBA does not rely solely on monetisation, but also includes a variety of non-monetary environmental metrics, as well as risk assessment quantification. A NEBA is similar to a CBA in that they both consider time accumulated ecosystem service flows (i.e., benefits and costs over time). As such, in implementing a NEBA-CA it is important to identify the primary alternatives that will be evaluated so that they can be compared for their ability to maximise environmental, social and economic benefits while managing site risks.

Brazilian from Rio de Janeiro, worked in many construction sites before university, when made for structural design and joined the Oil & Gas industry in late 2006. Joined Wood 10 years later, already as a Senior Structural Engineer, and in 2019 moved to Aberdeen to work in the same role. Has always been passionate about programming and its use in engineer, which increases productivity and saves time to focus on what really matters: the intellectual work, not the repetitive one.
The daily routine of an engineer is very often full of repetitive tasks and a large amount of data to deal with. The knowledge of a programming language, which used to be only a competitive edge, is becoming more and more a requirement. Many engineering software offers either a proprietary language (such as APDL for ANSYS) or native integration with another (such as Python support in Abaqus and Orcaflex). Even when there is no such environment, pre and post-processing of data may come out arduous but can be substantially eased with the use of programming, either in a formal programming language or just a well-structured spreadsheet. This presentation aims to showcase some tips and tricks as well as practical examples of the use of programming in engineering everyday life.
